Cafechurch: God - Being

  • Chalice 251 High Street Northcote, VIC, 3070 Australia (map)

Do you believe in God? It’s a simple enough question isn’t it? Surely everyone either does, or does not, or simply doesn’t know. But everyone knows what the question means, don’t they?

Or do they?

But what does the word “God” actually mean? Is God a dude in the sky? Yuri Gagarin, the first human being in space, is supposed to have said that when he got into space he looked around for God and couldn’t see him anywhere.[1] Was he the victim of a giant misunderstanding?

How confident are you that you actually know what the word “God” means?

In this series of conversations about God, the aim is not to win the argument: it is to explain what these central terms and ideas of, not just the Christian faith, but all theistic faiths, actually mean. So even if we agree to disagree, at least we will be at the level of an actual disagreement, not just standing on opposite sides of an unbridgeable divide.

We eat together at 7pm - bring your own dinner, or buy something from one of the many takeaway options on the street - and the “serious bit” begins at 8. We’re done by 9:15
